Thousands of wisdom teeth are extracted every day. In general, the wisdom teeth are considered medical waste and discarded. But inside wisdom teeth are stem cells that are healthy, viable, and have the potential to be a part of valuable treatment one day.
Doctors and researchers are constantly trying new therapies and uses for stem cells with the help of advancing science and technology. Instead of becoming medical waste, patients can opt to bank their wisdom teeth.
Sonoma Valley Oral Surgery & Dental Implants is proud to partner with Stemodontics™ to help patients who wish to bank their stem cells in a safe and ethical way. Learn more about stem cell banking by watching the provided videos, visit the Stemodontics website, or ask Dr. Boynton about your options for stem cell banking.
Stores of viable stem cells are found within healthy adult teeth, but it is often a rare opportunity for someone to have an otherwise healthy tooth extracted. Because wisdom teeth are so commonly removed, their extraction offers an ideal opportunity to bank these stem cells.
What are stem cells?
Stem cells are responsible for repairing and restoring tissues throughout the body. Whereas other cells can only duplicate into new like cells (such as muscle tissue cells duplicating new muscle tissue cells), stem cells are unique cells that can duplicate and grow into any other specialized cell. Depending on what the body may need, stem cells can duplicate into cells for skin, muscle, bones, nerves, etc.
In a controlled environment, adult stem cells have been found to be extremely viable. Doctors and researchers are hard at work to discover therapeutic applications for these powerhouse cells. There is always the hope that many conditions, diseases, and disorders that exist can one day be treated successfully.
Why bank stem cells?
Clinical trials are underway for many stem cell therapies, and doctors and researchers are constantly working to uncover further therapeutic potential for these cells. Banking your own healthy, viable stem cells now may provide peace of mind in the future. Harvesting your stem cells at a healthy, younger age provides maximum potential for collection. That’s because stem cells naturally break down in quantity and quality as we age. Since wisdom teeth are usually extracted in the early to mid-teenage years, it can be a great time to think about how to preserve these cells.
Sonoma Valley Oral Surgery & Dental Implants has partnered with Stemodontics to make it easy for patients and parents to harvest and bank the stem cells found in dental pulp. We want our patients to be informed of today’s advances and present the opportunity to bank their stem cells if they desire.
How do I get started?
Getting started with Stemodontics is simple and includes signing up at our office before your surgical procedure. Once you have signed up, Stemodontics will send a collection kit to Sonoma Valley Oral Surgery & Dental Implants that Dr. Boynton will use during your procedure to store the extracted teeth and ship them back to the Stemodontics laboratory. The teeth will be immediately processed and stored. To retrieve your sample, just contact Stemodontics. They will ship your sample to your designated healthcare provider upon request.
If you have any questions about Stemodontics, please feel free to ask Dr. Boynton about the enrollment, collection, and storage process, and be sure to visit the Stemodontics website.
